How to Start?
If you're a smoker considering transitioning to vaping, finding the right information might seem overwhelming.
We've put together a list of common questions to help you take the first step. Our team is available to assist you, both in our stores and online, by speak to our customer service team.
How Do the Devices Work?
All devices work in the same basic way: a battery powers a coil (heating element) that turns the liquid into vapor. Devices come in various shapes and sizes, all performing the same function but each in a unique way.
What Nicotine Dosage Should I Use?
- 1.5mg of nicotine: equivalent to 0 to 5 cigarettes per day.
- 3mg of nicotine: equivalent to 5 to 10 cigarettes per day.
- 4.5mg of nicotine: equivalent to 10 to 15 cigarettes per day.
- 6mg of nicotine: equivalent to 15 to 20 cigarettes per day.
There are two types of nicotine when it comes to vaping:
- Freebase Nicotine (NicShot): This is currently the most common type of nicotine found in stores. It can be harsher on the throat as the nicotine strength increases.
- Nicotine Salts (NicSalt): This form of nicotine is smoother and is absorbed more quickly, providing a sensation closer to smoking a cigarette. Nicotine salts are a popular choice, especially for heavy smokers.
What’s in My Liquid?
Vaping liquids contain three main ingredients:
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG): Increases vapor production and makes the liquid thicker.
- Propylene Glycol (PG): Enhances flavor and makes the liquid thinner.
- Flavorings: Used in food, added to make the liquid more pleasant.
All our liquids are strictly regulated and do not contain tobacco products. It's important to note that liquids should not be used by minors or non-smokers;
What Is the Right Device for Me?
MTL (Mouth-to-Lung): Mimics the draw of a cigarette, creating little vapor and generally used with a higher nicotine strength. Ideal for beginners as it replicates the smoking experience.
DTL (Direct-to-Lung): Creates a large amount of vapor and is rarely used with high nicotine. We recommend using them with lower nicotine content (between 1.5mg and 3mg).
What Is a Coil?
The coil is a crucial component of an e-cigarette. Located at the bottom of the tank, its function is to turn the liquid into vapor when energy is applied. A coil typically lasts between 7 to 10 days, but factors such as the type of liquid and frequency of use can affect its lifespan.
Types of Coils
Sub - Ohm Coils
Pre-Built Coils
Pods
Resistence Wire
How Do I Know When to Replace the Coil?
Some signs that the coil needs to be replaced include:
Loss of flavor.
Dramatic loss of vapor.
Visible burnt cotton.
Burnt taste while vaping.
Liquid leakage from the tank.
The average lifespan of a coil is around two weeks, depending on usage and liquid type.
How Do I Replace the Coil?
Replacing the coil can vary from tank to tank, but the basic principle is the same:
Remove the tank from the device.
Unscrew the coil counterclockwise and dispose of it.
Before inserting the new coil, add a few drops of liquid to the visible cotton.
Screw the new coil clockwise.
Assemble the tank onto the device and fill it.
Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to saturate the cotton before starting to vape.
Factors Affecting the Coil
Sugar Content and Liquid Viscosity: Liquids with high sugar content or viscosity may caramelize, reducing the coil’s lifespan.
Temperature and Power: High power and temperatures can burn the coil.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Lack of maintenance can lead to residue buildup that damages the coil.
Component Compatibility and Quality: Low-quality coils, contaminated or incompatible liquids can damage the coil.
Proper Use: Avoiding continuous vaping for long periods helps preserve the coil.
Environmental Conditions: Extreme temperatures can affect the device's performance.
What Makes the Tank Leak?
Leaks can be caused by:
Improperly installed coil.
Using a coil outside the recommended power range.
Improperly installed tank glass.
Storing the tank in the wrong position.
Exposure to extreme heat.
Battery Safety
Some devices use external batteries, usually in the formats 18350, 18650, 20700, 21700, or 26650. Although they are completely safe when used correctly, improper use or transport can be extremely dangerous. Devices with built-in batteries, which cannot be removed, also require attention to safety.
All devices with chips have built-in electronic safety mechanisms. To ensure battery safety, we recommend the following practices:
If using a device that requires two batteries, purchase them together and never separate them.
Turn off the device when not in use.
When transporting or storing spare batteries, always use a plastic battery case or a silicone cover.
Avoid contact between the batteries and other metals in your pockets, such as keys and coins, as this could complete the circuit, leading to overheating or explosion.
If the battery wrap is damaged (with cuts or peeling), do not use it!
Do not use the battery or device if they are damaged, swollen, or extremely hot.
For devices with removable batteries, it is recommended to use external battery chargers that are exclusively tested and recommended.
Only charge the batteries for the necessary amount of time, without leaving them unattended.
Avoid charging overnight and do not expose batteries to extreme temperatures, either hot or cold.
Keep the batteries away from water contact.
To clean the device, use alcohol-soaked wipes.
If you suspect the batteries are compromised, do not use them!
Dispose of the batteries responsibly by using the proper containers available at municipal recycling centers.
What is a Shortfill Liquid?
A shortfill is a liquid bottle that is not completely full, leaving enough space to add base or nicotine, ranging from 0mg to 3mg. The reason shortfills exist is due to the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), implemented in May 2017, which prohibits the sale of any bottle larger than 10ml with nicotine already mixed.
Shortfills allow the sale of larger liquid bottles, where nicotine is sold separately in 10ml bottles and can be added by the user. For example:
- A 60ml shortfill contains 50ml of liquid, to which 10ml of 18mg nicotine can be added, resulting in 60ml of 3mg liquid.
- A 120ml shortfill contains 100ml of liquid, to which 20ml of 18mg nicotine can be added, resulting in 120ml of 3mg liquid.
After adding the base or nicotine, shake the bottle vigorously to ensure proper mixing.
What is a Longfill Liquid?
A longfill is a liquid bottle that is also not completely full, leaving space to add base or nicotine in different concentrations (0mg, 3mg, 6mg, 9mg, or 12mg). Like shortfills, the existence of longfills is due to the TPD.
Longfills allow the sale of liquids in larger bottles, where nicotine and base can be added. Examples of longfills:
- A 30ml bottle may contain 10ml of liquid, to which 10ml of 18mg nicotine and 10ml of base can be added, resulting in 30ml of 6mg liquid.
- A 60ml bottle may contain 20ml of liquid, to which 10ml of 18mg nicotine and 30ml of base can be added, resulting in 60ml of 3mg liquid.
- A 120ml bottle may contain 30ml of liquid, to which 10ml of 18mg nicotine and 80ml of base can be added, resulting in 120ml of 1.5mg liquid.
As with shortfills, shake the bottle vigorously after adding the base or nicotine to ensure mixing.
How to Add Nicotine to the Liquid?
To add nicotine to your liquid, follow these steps:
Remove the bottle cap.
Remove the dropper.
Apply the required amount of nicotine.
Close the bottle again.
Shake well to mix the nicotine with the liquid.
At Contraste Vaping®, we recommend keeping liquids out of reach of children and pets. Store liquids in airtight containers, in a dry place, and away from direct sunlight.
Nicotine Shortcut Guide
Manufacturers usually leave space in shortfill bottles to add nicotine, allowing dilutions of 0mg to 3mg strength:
- 60ml shortfills contain 50ml of 0mg liquid, with space to add a 10ml NicShot or NicSalt at 18mg. When added, the liquid ends up at 3mg strength.
- 120ml shortfills contain 100ml of 0mg liquid, with space to add two 10ml NicShot or NicSalt at 18mg. When added, the liquid ends up at 3mg strength.
- Longfills also have space to add nicotine, allowing dilutions of 0mg to 12mg strength.
At Contraste Vaping®, we offer bottles of various sizes, allowing you to fill 60ml shortfill bottles (50ml of liquid) with two NicShot or NicSalt to increase the nicotine strength.
